Curatorial notes

This is G.C. Stich’s portrait of Pope Clement X, an engraving. It’s interesting to consider the role of images like this in early modern Europe. The Papal States were a major power in the 17th century, and engravings like this would have circulated widely. Stich’s portrait presents an image of power and authority. Consider the Pope’s robes, the laurel wreath, and the Papal insignia, all visual signs that reinforce his status. This portrait was made in 1676, the year Clement X died. The inscription states that he was created on April 29th. Was this image produced to commemorate his death or his creation? As historians, we can look to sources like Papal records, letters, and other documents to understand the social and political context in which this image was made. By doing so, we gain insight into the role of art in shaping perceptions of power and authority in the 17th century.
