This list of book titles and inventory, probably from the hand of Reinier Willem Petrus de Vries, offers a glimpse into the everyday process of being in the world with art and books. The cool grey ink on the warm toned paper creates a quiet harmony, and the handwriting itself is quite beautiful. Looking at the way the script gently leans and curves, you can imagine the artist’s hand moving across the page, each word a small gesture. It’s kind of like a dance, or the way a painter might layer colours, building up a surface through repetition. I’m especially drawn to the flourish beneath ‘Historischen,’ a little scribble that seems to contain the energy of the entire piece. This reminds me of the work of Cy Twombly, though much more subdued. Like Twombly, de Vries understands that art isn't just about making something perfect; it's about the process, the marks, and the energy left behind. It is a conversation, full of open-ended possibilities.
