Reinier Willem Petrus de Vries made this list of magazine titles, on a small, slightly crumpled piece of paper, possibly as a sketch or a note, its exact date unknown. The pale pencil strokes barely contrast with the cream color of the paper, and the handwriting is loose. Each letter is formed from a quick gesture, almost as if he’s trying to capture the essence of the words rather than writing them out perfectly. The texture is interesting; you can almost feel the paper’s surface, and imagine the soft graphite gliding across it. Look at the word ‘Buiten’ near the top. The ‘B’ starts strong, then fades as the pencil lifts. The letters aren't uniform, they feel casual, like they were dashed down quickly. I'm reminded of Cy Twombly in the way de Vries balances control and freedom. Both artists create art that embraces the immediacy of the moment. It’s this imperfect, human quality that makes this simple list so compelling, reminding us that art doesn't always need to shout – sometimes, it whispers.
