This five-panel screen was crafted by Chris Wegerif using batik-dyed fabric. Notice the heraldic lion rampant, sword in paw, emblazoned on the central panel. This lion, a symbol of courage, nobility, and royalty, echoes across centuries. We see it morph from ancient Mesopotamian guardians to medieval European coats of arms. The lion, a motif of strength and dominion, stirs deep within our collective psyche. Its roar, a primal sound, ignites a primeval recognition in us all. The stylized floral and geometric patterns on the flanking panels recall the Art Nouveau movement and point to the cycles of artistic evolution, where natural forms are abstracted and reinvented. These simplified forms, while modern, carry echoes of ancient decorative motifs found in cultures worldwide, revealing art as an endless recurrence of fundamental visual themes. The image as a powerful force engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level. The symbolic language speaks not just of artistry, but of how history repeats and reinvents itself.
