This ornately carved oak cabinet, likely created in the Netherlands, is a prime example of the intricate craftsmanship of the early 16th century. Dating back to c. 1520-1530, the cabinet features a gothic style with detailed carvings that evoke the intricate tracery of medieval architecture. The piece, now housed in the Rijksmuseum, is an excellent example of the artistic sophistication achieved in furniture making during this period.
Comments
This cabinet would have held a militia company’s valuables, such as drinking cups and guild chains. The imperial crown and the lily on the front panels pay homage to the sovereign, Emperor Charles V. Richly decorated and well preserved, this Gothic-style cabinet is considered one of the finest pieces of 16th-century furniture in the world.
