George Barbier created "Le cyprès et la rose; Robe d’été de Doeuillet" using pochoir in 1914. A serene palette of blues, pinks, and whites gently leads the eye through the composition. The eye is immediately drawn to the poised figure, whose elegance is accentuated by the soft, flowing lines of her dress and the delicate curve of her parasol. Barbier juxtaposes the natural and the constructed through the slim cypress trees and precisely placed roses against the backdrop of a stylized landscape. The cypress trees add a depth to the image, contrasting in size with the roses which draw the eye to the foreground. The composition also incorporates a secondary figure in the background, diminishing in scale to enhance the scene's depth. The flat planes of color and the stylized forms suggest a world where fashion and nature are equally designed. The artwork thus becomes a study in controlled beauty, reflecting the artifice and elegance characteristic of its time.
