Suzuki Harunobu created this woodblock print, "Young Man Holding Umbrella Beside a Fence," sometime in the mid-18th century. But, is it a young man? Does the figure’s androgynous appearance invite a critique of social norms and gender expectations in Japan at that time? During the Edo period, woodblock prints like this one gained popularity among the merchant class. They reflect the evolving tastes and interests of an increasingly affluent urban population. The print's delicate lines, subtle colors, and idealized representation of beauty align with the aesthetic preferences of the time. Further research into the social history of gender, class structure and the art market would help us to better understand its meaning, but we can appreciate how its visual codes and cultural references invite reflection on identity and social change.
