This print, Très Parisien, 1925, No. 1, Pl. 16.- MONTE CARLO, by G-P. Joumard is a fashion plate, and is made with what looks like stencil and pochoir. I love how the artist captured the way light interacts with surfaces. I'm really drawn to the way the artist used color to create a sense of depth and dimension. Look at the tan background against the archway behind the figure, and see how the color creates a subtle contrast. The brushstrokes, or whatever tool they were using, are pretty evident, and the ink is laid down in layers. I wonder what kind of stencils they were using to make the small floral patterns in the woman's dress? This reminds me of other fashion plates of the time, like Erté. There is a kind of conversation happening between artists from different backgrounds and disciplines. They are all responding to the same cultural and social forces. These images capture a moment in time, a feeling, a vibe.
