Studies for Lunettes [recto] 1890 - 1897

Charles Sprague Pearce created this study for lunettes using graphite on paper. At first glance, the arrangement of nine semi-circular vignettes presents a rhythmic, almost architectural structure on the tan paper. The figures within each lunette suggest moments of contemplation and activity, inviting a sense of narrative despite their fragmented presentation. Pearce's strategic use of the lunette form, traditionally a space for frescoes, prompts a semiotic reading of architectural and art-historical signs.
