The late Abbas Kiarostami, an Iranian film director, producer, screenwriter, photographer, and artist, made this installation using seven sycamore tree trunks. The installation consists of seven tree trunks placed upright within a small, demarcated area. Stripped of their branches, their rough bark remains visible, giving them a tactile and immediate presence. The tree trunks vary slightly in height and diameter, contributing to an organic feel. The sycamore trees as the material are critical to the work's meaning. Sycamore trees are known for their resilience and adaptability, which reflects Kiarostami’s concerns as an artist operating in a particular cultural and political context. By bringing nature into a gallery space, Kiarostami blurs the boundaries between the natural and artificial, challenging traditional notions of art and its relationship to the world around us. Kiarostami invites us to reconsider our relationship with the natural world, using sycamore trees, and challenging traditional distinctions between art and life.
