Monique Orsini painted this Untitled work with fluid gestures and a striking palette of reds, greys, and blacks, with hints of blue and yellow seeping through. Imagine her in the studio, brush in hand, diving into this vortex of layered strokes, each mark a decision, a response to the last. The paint looks thin, almost staining the canvas, allowing the colors to blend and bleed into each other. The sweeping arcs of grey suggest a hidden structure, like bones beneath the surface. And then, those jolts of red! They are like a burst of energy, or maybe even something a little darker. I see echoes of other painters here, maybe de Kooning, but Orsini is totally doing her own thing, too. It's a reminder that we are all in conversation, borrowing, stealing, and transforming ideas across time. Ultimately, painting embraces uncertainty, it’s not about fixed meanings but about possibilities, and it is in this ambiguity that we discover new ways of seeing.
