Valentina Remenar’s “Angel” is a study in symbols of transcendence. Wings, the most dominant motif, immediately evoke freedom and spiritual elevation, echoing ancient depictions from Mesopotamian deities to Renaissance cherubs. The color white, blanketing the figure, is itself laden with meaning. Traditionally it signifies purity, innocence, and divine light. But it’s not simply about the celestial. Consider how the "white goddess" archetype, found in various mythologies, embodies both creation and destruction, hinting at the complex, dual nature of this angel. Notice also the staff. In classical antiquity, the scepter was not just a symbol of power but also of divine authority, often linked to figures like Hermes or Iris, messengers between gods and mortals. These symbols, however, are not static; they morph and adapt across cultures and eras. What might a modern viewer, steeped in secularism and psychology, make of such imagery? Perhaps they reflect a deep-seated yearning for meaning, a subconscious desire to reconnect with something larger than ourselves.
