This old postcard, Prentbriefkaart aan Philip Zilcken, was sent by Dagmar Frandsen. It's a piece of ephemera, a slice of a life lived, sent through the mail. I imagine Frandsen with a pen in hand, hovering over the card, choosing each word, each stroke of the pen with care. What did she want to convey? What was the urgency, or the joy, that propelled her to write? It's like a little performance, a dance of language and intention on a very small stage. The handwriting is tight and looping, full of personal energy. It reminds me of Cy Twombly, how he would scribble across the canvas, making marks that are both deliberate and totally free. There's a tenderness to the act of writing, a desire to connect, even across time. Like a painter, Frandsen is trying to capture something essential, a fleeting moment of thought and feeling. I can feel the echo of her voice in every letter. It is like she's speaking directly to me, sharing a secret, a memory, a piece of her heart.
