This postcard, addressed to Philip Zilcken, was created by Halfdan Strøm. The way the ink bleeds into the paper shows a beautiful embrace of the material. It’s amazing how even the simplest act of handwriting can become a work of art. Look at the way the letters are formed, the pressure and release of the pen. The words lean and dance across the card. The stamps and postmarks layered on top. The texture of the card itself. The green ink stands out so vividly, even now. It becomes a record of a moment in time. I imagine the message within holding a deeper story, as the ink now bears witness to the intimate thoughts that once existed between the sender and receiver. It reminds me of the kind of experimental writing you see in the work of Cy Twombly, where language becomes a kind of abstract mark making. A suggestion. All art is a conversation, an ongoing exchange of ideas that embraces ambiguity and multiple interpretations.
