Editor: So, this postcard to Renée Hélène Laure Zilcken is rendered in ink on paper by Dagmar Frandsen, and it appears to date somewhere between 1911 and 1919. The sepia tones lend it this antique feeling and with all the stamps, postmarks and hand-written notes, it just makes you wonder about the journey it’s been on. What particularly resonates with you? Curator: For me, this isn’t just a drawing; it’s a whisper from the past, wouldn’t you say? I mean, just look at it, we see evidence of Frandsen's touch, literally in every flourish and pressed impression across the page. The smudged postmarks become part of the aesthetic and texture of the artifact. And then, you start imagining…who was Renée Hélène Laure Zilcken? What were they like, what were their passions? I can get lost for hours imagining their life. Does this not transport you into the heart of a story only just glimpsed? Editor: It absolutely does! It feels almost voyeuristic to be handling such a personal artifact. What do you think of the composition itself, particularly with how the message is integrated alongside the stamps and addresses? Curator: It's like the world shrunk, do you agree? A little rectangular portal capturing a web of personal connections, a distant world, compressed and delivered through time, from Frandsen’s hand to Zilcken's – via the postal service of course! It reminds me that art isn't just about grand canvases or bronze statues, sometimes it lives and breathes on a humble, transient little thing like this postcard. Editor: I never thought of it that way. It’s kind of exciting to think about art existing in these unassuming everyday objects. Thanks for sharing that perspective! Curator: Anytime. There are so many untold stories contained within the art surrounding us, especially the ordinary art. And the best bit is yet to come: creating our own!
