This postcard to Philip Zilcken by Rose Imel is kind of amazing, isn't it? I'm picturing Rose Imel holding a pen, maybe a scratchy nib, and letting loose on this little piece of card. Look at the way the ink flows and pools, and how the writing overlaps. I can almost feel her hand moving across the surface, pouring out thoughts in elegant loops and dashes. I wonder what she was thinking about as she wrote, what was happening in her life, and her relationship to Philip Zilcken? Maybe she wanted to make a really nice mark. It reminds me of Cy Twombly’s paintings, all those scribbles that are so free. And the official stamps in the corner add this weird, bureaucratic, but also beautiful touch. It's like Rose Imel and Twombly, even across time, are in this ongoing conversation, egging each other on to just let it all out. Painting is like that, you know? It’s about making your mark, leaving something of yourself behind.
