Editor: This work by Gerd Winner shows a brick wall, and I'm struck by the texture and the way it highlights the materials. What can you tell me about its production? Curator: This piece compels us to consider labor. Think about the making of the bricks, the laying of the wall, and then Winner's process of translating that into art. What social contexts might influence his choices? Editor: Perhaps a commentary on urban decay or the beauty in the everyday? Curator: Precisely! It challenges the hierarchy between craft and fine art, asking us to value the materiality and the act of making itself. I found this work very inspiring. Editor: I agree. I'll never look at a brick wall the same way again.
