Editor: This print by Gerd Winner shows a long brick wall alongside a street. The sepia tone gives it a somber, almost haunting quality. What do you see in this image? Curator: Walls are powerful symbols, aren't they? They represent division, protection, but also confinement. The stark perspective draws the eye to a vanishing point, implying a journey, perhaps even a struggle against unseen boundaries. Editor: Struggle? How so? Curator: The bricks themselves carry weight, each one a small unit of construction, but together they form a barrier. The subdued color palette adds to a sense of foreboding. Does it remind you of other imposing structures? Editor: It does now. I hadn't considered the symbolic weight of the wall itself. Curator: Symbols often gain meaning through repeated use and cultural association.
