Wojciech Fangor made this painting, "Koło," and what strikes me first is how soft it is, like a Rothko but with a bullseye. The edges of the circle aren't really edges at all; they're more like hazy boundaries. I love how the colors bleed into each other: the warm, almost sunset orange fading into a cool black and then into a blue that feels like both a bruise and an inner light. Fangor's use of color makes the image feel like it’s breathing, expanding and contracting all at once. I wonder if that white center is a void or a source. This reminds me a little of the Op Art of Bridget Riley, but somehow more gentle, more about feeling than seeing. Ultimately, Fangor offers not a solid form but a sensation, a space for contemplation.
