Pat Lipsky painted "In Memoriam C.G." with what looks like hundreds of squares of dark, glossy paint. You can see the artist building it up, shifting and emerging through trial, error, and intuition. I really sympathize with Lipsky, imagining her standing in the studio, maybe thinking about C.G., maybe not, and methodically applying paint to the canvas. Is the paint thick or thin? I’m interested in the feel of the brush, its movement across the surface as she is in this process. Each square is an independent gesture that communicates feeling, intention, or meaning through color and texture. This piece feels related to the work of other painters who use geometry, repetition, and seriality, like Agnes Martin or Sol LeWitt. Artists are in an ongoing conversation, an exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. Painting is a form of embodied expression which embraces ambiguity and uncertainty. It allows for multiple interpretations and meanings, where we can bring our own sense of feeling to the grid.
