Editor: These 'Diary Pages' by Nasreen Mohamedi... they strike me as both meticulously planned and somehow haunted. The straight lines create a rigid structure, but the smudges and faint markings hint at something more elusive, a kind of hidden language perhaps. What whispers do you hear when you look at them? Curator: Whispers indeed! I like that. For me, it’s about the quiet tension between control and surrender. Imagine Mohamedi, hunched over these pages, deliberately drawing each line, a practice bordering on meditation. The imperfections, those 'flaws', are where the art breathes, isn't it? It is her accepting of things and how there are accidents and life outside what we design or believe. Editor: So, the intention isn't necessarily to achieve perfect geometry? Curator: Precisely. It’s the space between the lines, the subtle gradations of tone, like listening to the silence between musical notes. Did she labour over this? Probably. Did she maybe find that in working and being so concentrated she freed her mind of other things and issues that occurred throughout the day? These pages don’t feel 'resolved,' they feel like fragments of a much larger, ongoing exploration, which adds to the haunted feel, yes. Almost incomplete. Editor: Like capturing fleeting thoughts. I see it now. A disciplined release. Curator: A disciplined release. A contradiction to live by! Beauty in order, even disorder and I suspect a reflection of how the universe unfolds – isn’t it glorious? Editor: Definitely food for thought – or, dare I say, feeling! Thank you for shining a light on those quieter aspects. Curator: My pleasure! Remember, it’s about letting the art nudge your soul, ever so gently.
