This is a newspaper called De Vrije Kunstenaar, from January 1946. It's all text, of course, but I can imagine the layouts, the process of collating and layering information, the way the words become images. You can imagine the excitement and struggle of the artist, Dico. What were they thinking as they made it? Did they even consider themselves an artist? It's about art in general, the place of the artist in Dutch society after the war. It’s like they’re building a community through print. It reminds me of other artists who use text in their work, like Jenny Holzer, but in a different way. This is more about communication and organization, less about art. But that’s what I like about it. It blurs the lines between art and life. Artists are always in conversation with one another, borrowing and riffing on ideas, creating something new. It's all about embodied expression and embracing the unknown.
