This newspaper, *Wilhelmina Regina / Algemeen Handelsblad*, was made in 1938, probably with ink on paper. It uses the mark-making of printing, but the layouts, typefaces and borders are carefully considered. For me, the way in which information is arranged on a page is a kind of drawing. Look at the texture of this page. It’s not just flat words; there are crests and decorative borders. The ink, likely a single color, creates depth through variation of tone, denser where the ink is thicker. The page is framed with patterns, almost like the paper is sitting in a mount. Think about how these physical aspects shape our experience. Here, the way the page is designed tells us something about its status. Newspapers from this time period feel like graphic design, but they also remind me of the formal paintings of artists like Mondrian. Art is an ongoing conversation. It doesn't have fixed meanings.
