This broadside, *Volk van Nederland*, roughly translated as ‘People of the Netherlands’ looks like it was produced with rudimentary means. I can imagine the designer laying out the text and images by hand, cutting and pasting them together, before printing. The combination of the text and the image of a flag and crown create a strong message. It is so obviously a political call to action, but I can only wonder what that call might be. I want to know what the person who created this was like. Were they a printer by trade? Were they an angry citizen with a political message? Or a collective of people who came together in a moment of crisis to produce this piece of propaganda? There's something so raw and immediate about this work. It reminds me that art doesn't always have to be polished or refined to be powerful. It makes me think about the way artists and designers throughout history have used simple tools and techniques to create works that speak truth to power.
