Liam Gillick made this 'Liaison Structure' from painted aluminum. The artwork reminds me of walking past a building site. It is bright, bold, and rhythmic. I can almost hear the clanging and banging as each vertical element gets slotted into place. Did he consider how the color combinations would work together? I wonder how the artwork has come into being, shifting and emerging through trial, error, and intuition. The paint seems smooth and thin, like it has been industrially made. But maybe, by repeating the single unit, Gillick is exploring seriality and minimalism. I am thinking of Sol LeWitt, or even Agnes Martin who both use repetition as a form of expression. Artists are in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity, aren't we? This piece embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations, and meaning over fixed or definitive readings.
