This installation by Claude Rutault, called dé-finition/méthode #505, it's like a letter written in yellow paint, maybe to a doctor named Barnes. The colour, a bright, sunny yellow, is a real mood lifter, like a shot of vitamin D on a cloudy day. Looking closer, you can see how the paint has been applied. It's smooth and even, almost like a wall, which, well, it is. The squares and rectangles of colour fit together so neatly, they’re like building blocks, or the artist writing his own rules. There's a real simplicity to it all. It reminds me of Sol Lewitt, with his systematic approach to artmaking, but with a warmer, more playful touch. This piece feels like a reminder that art doesn't always have to be complicated or fussy, it can be about embracing simplicity, colour, and the joy of the process.
