Hryhorii Havrylenko made this watercolour painting, Summer Landscape, sometime before 1984. Look at the way he's handled the paint, so freely! The way the pigment bleeds into the paper creates soft, undefined shapes, which I think really helps evoke the hazy atmosphere of a hot summer day. Up close, you can see the texture of the paper showing through the translucent washes of colour. See how he's layered the greens and browns to suggest depth and form in the trees and field? There's this one little dark stroke right in the middle of the trees, a tiny mark, but it anchors the whole composition, pulling your eye back into the distance. Watercolour is so lovely. It's not about control, but about letting the medium do its thing, embracing the unpredictable nature of the flow. This reminds me a little bit of Fairfield Porter, who was also working with watercolour in a similar, loose style. It shows how artists are always in dialogue with each other, building upon the ideas and techniques of those who came before. It's so interesting how these connections play out across time.
