About this artwork

John Marin created this watercolor painting, Landscape, in the United States, but we can't be sure exactly when. Marin was known for his modern, expressive landscapes, part of a larger movement that was re-evaluating the social role of art. This work is a loose, atmospheric rendering of trees in a field. Marin’s gestural brushstrokes and the translucent quality of watercolor evoke a sense of immediacy and the changing effects of light and weather. It speaks to the influence of European modernism in American art during the early 20th century, when artists were grappling with urbanization and industrialization. Marin aimed to capture the energy and dynamism of modern life. To understand the painting better, we can look at other works by Marin, writings by critics, exhibition catalogues, and letters. With access to these resources, we can begin to understand Marin’s place in the art world of his time. Art is always part of an evolving conversation.
