This photograph of an unknown woman, with hat and basket of eggs, was made by Lettsome & Sons. It feels so muted, doesn't it? Like a memory fading at the edges. I'm drawn to the way the plaid shawl almost disappears into the backdrop, a whisper of pattern. Look closely at her basket. Each egg is a little dab of light, a hopeful moment captured. The texture of the woven basket is rough and real against the smooth, idealized face. It’s like she’s holding possibility itself. I’m reminded of some of the early Impressionists, like Berthe Morisot, who used a similar soft focus to portray women in domestic settings. There's a conversation happening across time and mediums about how we see and value these quiet moments, this everyday poetry. Art, like life, is all about embracing the mystery.
