This studio portrait of an unknown woman was captured by P. Steensma, sometime between the late 19th and early 20th century. It’s got this timeless quality to it, right? The monochrome palette really strips everything down to its essence, forcing you to focus on form, texture and mood. I wonder what it was like to be Steensma, setting up the shot, arranging the lighting, waiting for just the right moment. Did he feel the weight of responsibility, capturing a likeness for posterity? Look how the background is softly blurred, as if she’s emerged from a dream. It reminds me of the backgrounds of Whistler, and the way he created an atmosphere, a sense of interiority. I am always struck by how artists work in dialogue with one another. It's as if they’re building a shared visual language, adding their own unique inflections. Each photograph, each painting, is a new word in that ever-evolving conversation.
