This postcard to Andries Bonger and Anne Marie Louise van der Linden was written by Emile Bernard on December 24th, 1908. The handwriting sprawls across the card like a river finding its course, spontaneous and free. I imagine Bernard in his studio, grabbing this card amidst a flurry of thoughts. He’s jotting down a message, a holiday greeting filled with warmth and friendship, a promise of a longer letter soon to come. The ink bleeds slightly into the paper, each stroke carrying a bit of his energy, his mood. It makes me think about all the conversations between artists, the silent dialogues happening across time and space. We're all just trying to figure something out, riffing off each other, throwing ideas back and forth. Bernard’s postcard is a small part of this big, ongoing conversation. It's a reminder that painting, writing, making art is about connection, about reaching out.
