Coco Harms Tiepen made this newspaper clipping sometime in the past, probably using scissors and glue! I think about collage as a process of rearranging the world. The layering and juxtaposition here, cutting one thing and pasting it next to something completely unrelated, creates new meaning. Look at the old photographs, the way they contrast with the faded print. The texture of the paper itself, aged and fragile, adds another layer. It's a simple thing, a newspaper clipping, but it's full of ghosts. Think about Kurt Schwitters, who elevated the detritus of everyday life into art. Or maybe Hannah Höch, who used collage to critique and satirize society. Art is like this, one big conversation, always building on what came before, and always leaving room for something new. It's never just one thing.
