Here's a transparent structure made of perspex and plastic by Martha Boto. I imagine Boto experimenting with the materials, trying to figure out how to create a sense of movement. There's a real sense of play here, an artist working out spatial relations, and the relationship between transparency and form. I’m thinking about a whole history of sculpture here. You can see a clear interest in the work of Bauhaus artists, and others who explored geometry and space. Boto takes that vocabulary and pushes it further. I think she creates something that's both intellectual and deeply felt. There is a certain feeling that emerges from the structure. Artists are always in conversation with one another, building on the ideas of those who came before. This feels true for her too.
