This is Hendrik Petrus Berlage’s architectural drawing of ‘De Nieuwe Beurs op het Damrak te Amsterdam gezien komende van den Dam’. Berlage was commissioned to design the Amsterdam Stock Exchange at a time of great social change in the Netherlands. As the country industrialized, the old aristocratic order had to make way for a new social class: the bourgeoisie. Berlage, being a social democrat, had very strong opinions about the role architecture could play in this transformation. He believed in a synthesis of art and society. Here, Berlage presents multiple perspectives of the Stock Exchange, including street-level views, elevations, and floor plans. This reflects his commitment to making architecture accessible and transparent to the public. What is striking in this image is the contrast between the imposing facade of the Stock Exchange and the delicate lines of the drawing. It is as if Berlage wants to emphasize the power of the people, represented by the collective effort of building such a monumental structure. Berlage’s Stock Exchange stood as a physical manifestation of evolving societal values. It is a testament to the transformative potential of architecture.
