This skylight panel is part of a set of six, made by William Gray Purcell, and residing at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. It's so interesting to see the way the light filters through each little pane, right? The colors feel restrained, almost like a natural palette. The greens, yellows, and blues create this sense of tranquility that is pretty meditative. The grid of the panel kind of reminds me of a Mondrian painting, but instead of paint, Purcell uses light and colored glass. The way each small section of glass is fitted together is kind of like composing a mosaic, and that gives the whole panel a really specific rhythm. This skylight really makes me think about the way artists have always been fascinated with light, and how they've found different ways to capture it. It makes you realize that art is always talking to other art.
