Curator: Here at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, we have an intriguing work titled "Rectangular stained glass window" of unknown origin. Editor: It's luminous. My first thought is of Byzantine churches, though this is quite different. The detail, though—exquisite! I am drawn to the symmetry in the window. Curator: Indeed, the window marries both symmetry and symbolism. It would be easy to say, at first glance, that the piece aligns to conventional designs of ecclesiastical art from the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, though clearly rooted in Jewish symbolism with images like the Star of David and Menorah. But I’d like to push on this piece as something potentially very different. Editor: Do explain! The material—glass and its inherent quality to refract light, the geometry... It seems constructed of discrete units, each carefully considered, united into a stunning, cohesive form, and visually striking. Curator: Well, consider the socio-political climate and social dynamics of the period, its position in public imagery. Decorative stained-glass such as this one acted as not only religious and ethnic self-definition but declarations to outsiders and potentially critical members of the mainstream. What do you make of the inclusion of ‘Harmony’ on the piece? Editor: It anchors the theme of hope—of building a peaceful home—of identity in a new, if occasionally hostile, world. I imagine this could be interpreted differently by those with differing social beliefs. Curator: Exactly. It tells us as much about its cultural moment as about faith. What an artifact, isn’t it? Editor: Truly. Thank you. Its striking blend of color and meaning—and now context—will stay with me. Curator: It gives one so much to reflect upon, even now.
