Moshe Kupferman made this painting with the simplest of means, lines and blocks of colour. What’s interesting is how he doesn’t hide the evidence of his mark making; you can see how the painting came together, layer by layer. There’s a kind of emotional directness to it. Look at how the colours interact; the muted red and grey feel melancholic but are balanced by the white ground. The lines are like a screen or a barrier, but they’re also permeable, allowing glimpses of what lies beneath. They remind me of Agnes Martin, in the way they use simple forms to create a sense of depth and space. It’s a reminder that art isn’t about perfection or resolution, but about the ongoing process of seeing, feeling, and thinking. It’s an invitation to slow down, to pay attention to the small details, and to find beauty in the unexpected.
