Moshe Kupferman made this ‘Untitled’ artwork with paint to create an image that's more like a feeling than a picture. Look at how the lines are laid down, not too precise, but not messy either. They’re like a structure, but one that's breathing. The colors, mostly blues and browns, feel muted and soft. It's as though Kupferman is interested in the process of making the art, the back-and-forth of adding and subtracting. See how the vertical lines go all the way through, yet there's this dark brown bar interrupting them at the top. It’s kind of like a pause. And then at the bottom, those scribbled lines feel like someone just let loose, maybe after being too careful up above. It’s all very physical. This reminds me a little of Agnes Martin’s grids, but if she decided to let her hair down a bit. Kupferman invites us to see the world not as fixed but as something always becoming.
