J.A. Jerichau (II) made this page of notes, whose title translates as ‘Notater’, using ink on paper. It feels like peeking into a private world, doesn’t it? A sea of handwritten script in faded brown ink, almost like a ghostly trace of thoughts. I can almost see the artist hunched over this page, pen in hand, lost in concentration. I wonder what kind of world Jerichau was trying to make sense of through these notations? The smudges and blots, the crossings-out - they tell a story of struggle, of wrestling with ideas, much like the physical act of painting. The layering of marks reminds me of Cy Twombly’s scrawls - it's all about intuition, building up layers of meaning through gesture and chance. And isn’t that what art is all about? A conversation across time, where artists riff off each other, inspiring new ways of seeing and thinking?
