This page from a sketchbook is from around 1916, by the Danish artist J.A. Jerichau (II). It’s a draft of a letter, maybe a love letter, filled with apologies and news from a trip. Look at the handwritten script flowing across the page, a cascade of thoughts and feelings captured in ink. I can imagine Jerichau hunched over this notebook, pouring out their heart, trying to find the right words. The act of writing itself becomes a kind of performance, each stroke of the pen a gesture of vulnerability and connection. The ink has faded, but the energy of the artist, I think, is still there in those delicate lines. And then, at the bottom, is this little sketch of a figure, almost like an afterthought. It's as if the artist needed to ground themselves, to bring a sense of physicality to all those swirling emotions. It reminds me that art isn't just about what we see on the surface, but about the whole messy, human process of making and feeling. It echoes the artist's wider body of work, and the work of painters everywhere.
