This porcelain cup was made by the Meissen Manufactory in Germany. The delicate, raised floral design speaks to the luxury market for which Meissen porcelain was created. During the 18th century, porcelain production was a closely guarded secret, and Meissen was the first to produce it outside of Asia. The manufactory was supported by the King of Saxony, who sought to enhance his prestige through the production of fine goods. Porcelain became a symbol of status and refinement, eagerly collected by the European aristocracy. The cup’s floral motifs reflect the influence of Asian ceramics, which were highly prized in Europe. At the same time, the whiteness and purity of the porcelain were intended to evoke European ideals of beauty and elegance. By studying the archives of the Meissen Manufactory, we can learn about the artisans who made these objects, the social networks in which they circulated, and the meanings they held for their original owners.
