The A.C. Williams Company made this cast iron sculpture of a St. Bernard dog, sometime in the early 20th century. St. Bernards were bred in the Swiss Alps, at the hospice of the Great St. Bernard Pass, where they were trained for rescue work. So, this sculpture participates in the late 19th and early 20th century phenomenon, when the St. Bernard was promoted to the status of an almost mythical rescuer. The A.C. Williams Company was a manufacturer of cast iron toys, doorstops, and other novelty items. Their products were marketed to a wide range of consumers and could be found in department stores, hardware stores, and toy stores across America. Understanding the history of A.C. Williams Company and the cultural status of St. Bernards helps us understand the sculpture. This piece reflects not only artistic expression but also the societal values and historical events that shape the production and reception of art.
