This "Boxer Head" still bank, of unknown date, was created by an anonymous artist. The choice of a boxer as a motif is evocative, given this breed’s complicated history, and the cultural meanings we attach to dogs. On the one hand, dogs are perceived as symbols of loyalty, while, historically, particular breeds have been associated with elitism and wealth. On the other hand, these animals have been weaponized in different contexts, used to intimidate and control enslaved and oppressed populations. The lock hanging from the boxer’s neck might be interpreted in different ways. Does it represent a longing for freedom, or perhaps the safety of constraint? Does the animal appear aggressive or submissive? These are some of the conflicting sentiments and questions that this artwork elicits.
