Theo van Hoytema created this calendar page for February with crayon and pencil. The blackbird, or merel, is the dominant symbol, perched with a worm in its beak. Birds have long been associated with omens, their appearance and behavior interpreted as signs from the divine. In ancient times, the flight of birds was meticulously studied for divination. This connects to ancient Babylonian beliefs, where the movement of animals was carefully observed. Over time, these practices evolved, yet the fundamental idea of nature bearing messages persists. Even the simple act of a bird carrying food resonates. Consider depictions of doves carrying olive branches, symbols of peace. The merel, here, is a more humble messenger, yet it evokes a similar emotional response, a subconscious recognition of provision and hope amidst the starkness of winter. This calendar evokes a psychological connection to nature's cycles, engaging us on a deeper, more intuitive level. The image has a non-linear progression as it resurfaces, evolving, and taking on new meanings in different historical contexts.
