Johannes de Groot created this print of Dirck Pietersz. Crabeth, the 16th century glass painter from Gouda. De Groot, born in 1689, rendered Crabeth’s portrait in an oval frame, in the style of the earlier Dutch Masters. Crabeth was a significant figure during the Protestant Reformation, and his work in stained glass was deeply influenced by the religious and political upheavals of his time. Crabeth created alternative narratives within the traditional biblical scenes he painted, reflecting the changing social and religious landscape. The inscription around the portrait celebrates Crabeth as a painter of glass windows for the church of Saint John in Gouda. Crabeth’s expressive portraits of the Dutch elite were celebrated for capturing their inner character, and De Groot emulates this, conveying Crabeth's dignity and intellect, inviting us to consider the emotional and spiritual depth of his work.
