Curator: Oh, he's magnificent, isn't he? This is George Vertue's portrait of Sir Thomas Gresham. I wonder what he was like. Editor: My first impression is one of serious wealth and maybe just a hint of… stubbornness? That's a substantial beard! Curator: Well, Gresham was a financier in the 16th century and the founder of the Royal Exchange in London, so wealthy is spot on! The stars on his coat of arms suggest he might have been ambitious, too. Editor: Absolutely, and the oval frame feels very deliberate. Like it's containing all that power and presence. Gives you a sense of inherited legacy. Curator: Perhaps, or maybe it’s just trying to keep him from escaping. I do find myself wondering, what would he make of the world today? Editor: Me too. After looking at this image, I feel like I know more about myself. Curator: Doesn't art do that so well?
