This is a page from a photo album by Carolina Onnen, showing four photographs from a trip to Marseille and Greece. The grey tones and the starkness of the images feel very immediate, almost like sketches rather than carefully composed photographs. There's something so tactile about these images. They're like little windows, each offering a glimpse into a specific moment. You can almost feel the grainy texture of the paper, and the way the light hits the buildings. In one photo, there are a group of people standing in front of a building with archways. The shadows are dark, and their poses are so casual. There's a realness to it that is very appealing. It feels uncomposed. It reminds me a little of the work of Sophie Calle, she also captured memories like souvenirs, in a diaristic mode, which could be read as an extension of the self. They both have this ability to capture the poetry of everyday life. It's a nice reminder that art doesn't always have to be about grand gestures; sometimes it's about finding beauty in the small things, or just making an attempt to record and connect to the world.
