These photographs, of the SS. Statendam, Hofdijk, and Station D.P, are arranged on a page of an album by an anonymous hand. The monochrome images suggest a world viewed through a lens of memory and nostalgia, a process of piecing together moments in time. Each photograph offers a glimpse into a different facet of life. The surface of the album page becomes a canvas for arranging these images, creating a new narrative through their juxtaposition. I'm drawn to the way the photographs are slightly tilted, as though in motion. The candid quality of the images, with their imperfect angles and grainy textures, brings to mind the work of artists like Gerhard Richter, who embrace chance and imperfection as integral parts of their process. Like Richter, the creator of this album seems less concerned with capturing perfect representations. Instead, they appear to be interested in the raw, unpolished reality of experience.
