Victor Brauner made this intriguing “Doll Bottle” from humble materials: paper, string, and pigment. It looks like a found object that was then deliberately embellished. The brown paper is wrapped and bound, defining a simple body-like form. The artist has added just enough painted detail to create a figure: two faces at the top, bisected by the string, with stylized torsos and legs beneath. The palette is deliberately restricted, and the facture immediate. There is nothing slick or refined here. Brauner was associated with the Surrealist movement, which valued direct expression of the subconscious. The rough and ready character of this work, with its echoes of folk art, give it a powerful presence. It almost seems like a talisman, made by someone on the margins of society. By embracing this kind of raw materiality, Brauner resisted the slickness of consumer culture and opened a space for something more authentic.
