This cast iron “Bear Standing” coin bank was created by the Kenton Hardware Manufacturing Company, sometime between 1890 and 1950. These banks were common during this time, as the working class sought to find ways to save money. The bank represents a bear standing upright, a posture that reflects a cultural fascination and fear surrounding wildlife. During this period, rapid industrialization led to increased encounters with wildlife, and it can be viewed as a symbol of nature being tamed. The choice of a bear is also interesting, evoking ideas about strength and resilience. The act of saving, represented by the coin slot in the bear's back, also invites reflection on labor and the value of money. The bear becomes a guardian of accumulated wealth, reflecting the aspirations and anxieties of a changing society.
